I was living in South Florida in the 1980's, and one of the newspapers ran an article about a town created by African Americans in Central Florida somewhere. I can't recall the name of the town.
Sometime in the early part of the 20th Century a white mob from a neighboring town accused some resident of the black town of some imaginary offense and attacked them with guns and torches. Many black men stayed behind, with guns, and sent the women an children running off. extra sized garments suitable for the mother of the brides
mob attacked, and the black men shot back. They were all eventually killed, but they killed several white mob members.
The women and children made it to railroad tracks and followed them. A passing freight train engineer saw them, stopped, and heard their story. He had them all board the train and took them to safety.
The local whites struck the name of the town from its maps, and covered up the crime.
